Call for papers on process safety for SAIChE2012

Message to anyone working in process safety in South Africa.
1.	I am writing to appeal to you to consider submitting a paper on a process safety...

Message to anyone working in process safety in South Africa.
1.	I am writing to appeal to you to consider submitting a paper on a process safety topic at the SAIChE 2012 conference to be held on 16-19 September at the Champagne Sport Resort in the Drakensberg.
2.	I don’t need to tell you that there has been an increased interest in process safety in recent years, prompted by incidents such as BP Texas City and BP Deepwater Horizon.
3.	Those of you who are IChemE members will be aware that the ‘tce’ magazine devotes at least a quarter to a third to process safety topics; and that IChemE/AIChE hold annual conferences devoted solely to process safety.
4.	You will probably agree that in South Africa there is not that much interest in process safety, and that CAIA are trying to remedy that with their quarterly Process Safety Forum and annual Process Safety Workshops.
5.	Those of you who are SAIChE members will know that the triennial conference is being held in the Drakensburg over the period 16-19 September. I have not attended all the SAIChE conferences, but I can recall very little process safety content. I think the time is right to change this. I am therefore sending out this appeal to anyone working in the field of process safety, to seriously consider submitting a paper on a process safety topic, for presentation at the conference. The closing date for abstracts has passed, but I feel sure the conference organisers would welcome more papers on this theme. I believe we should try and fill at least two sessions with process safety papers.
6.	There is another reason why it would be good to have a strong process safety session at the conference. IChemE have offered to get a senior person from the UK HSE to deliver a key-note address at the conference, which would be a real coup for the advancement of process safety in South Africa. The Health and Safety Executive is the UK government agency responsible for regulating occupational safety in the UK, and they are very strong on process safety, with literally hundreds of engineers and scientists working in the field. We (in SA) need to show them that we are take process safety seriously.
